One of the most challenging stages of the entire Northern Way, with two climbs to overcome. The first is long and steady, immersed in the woods, alternating between dirt road and asphalt, leading you to Pieve de’ Saddi. The second is shorter but steeper, just before reaching Pietralunga, a small village nestled in the green landscape, ideal for relaxing and resting. Dinner and overnight stay at accommodation in Pietralunga.

Itinerary along the Northern Section of the Way of Saint Francis
An itinerary along the Northern Section of the Way of St. Francis that you can travel with your own bicycle or with our assistance using a rental bike.
Itinerary
Day 1: Assisi – La Verna Sanctuary – Sansepolcro (approx. 35 km)
Arrive in Assisi in the morning, leave your car, and transfer by private van to the La Verna Sanctuary, where the first cycling stage begins. You can visit the impressive sanctuary, nestled in the woods, before setting off on your bike. You will pass through Pieve Santo Stefano, then cycle along Lake Montedoglio before arriving in Sansepolcro. Dinner and overnight stay at accommodation in Sansepolcro.
Day 2: Sansepolcro - Città di Castello (30 km)
You will leave Sansepolcro behind to cycle through the countryside between Tuscany and Umbria. The only climb of the day is the fairly steep one that will lead you to the village of Citerna. From there, you continue towards Città di Castello, largely utilizing the unpaved cycle path that runs alongside the Tiber River. Dinner and overnight stay at accommodation in Città di Castello.
Day 3: Città di Castello - Pietralunga (30 km)
Day 4: Pietralunga - Gubbio (24 km)
Leaving Pietralunga behind, you will cycle on roads immersed in the green Umbrian nature, almost entirely free of traffic. You will have two climbs to tackle on this stage as well, but they are not too demanding. The final kilometers before arriving in the heart of Gubbio will be completely flat. Dinner and overnight stay at accommodation in Gubbio.
Day 5: Gubbio - Valfabbrica (33 km)
In the morning, take a sightseeing tour of the city with the Gubbio Express. This stage continues through the nature of the Umbrian Apennines and brings you significantly closer to Assisi. Along the way, you will face two climbs, which will reward you with stunning views of the surrounding valleys before arriving at the small historic village of Valfabbrica. Dinner and overnight stay at accommodation in Valfabbrica.
Day 6: Valfabbrica - Assisi (22 km)
Assisi is now just around the corner, and the few kilometers to travel will allow you to arrive easily. You will only have a few rolling hills to overcome in the first part of the day, while the last kilometers, which alternate between dirt road and asphalt, run through the Umbrian plain from where you can already glimpse the unmistakable profile of Assisi.
