How to prepare your bike for a long trip: a few basic maintenance tips before departure
- Before setting off on a long trip or a bike adventure, what is the first thing to check?
Safety comes first. We always recommend starting with a general inspection of the bike: tire pressure, brake condition, drivetrain, and the tightness of the main components. Even a small issue, during a long journey, can turn into a major problem after many kilometers. - Letās start with the tires: what should be done?
Tires are the bikeās point of contact with the road, so they need to be checked carefully. You should make sure they are not too worn, cut, or hardened by age. Then it is essential to check the pressure: if it is too low, the risk of punctures increases; if it is too high, the bike becomes less stable and less comfortable. The ideal pressure depends on the type of bike, the riderās weight, and the terrain to be tackled. - What about the brakes?
The brakes must be in perfect condition, especially if you are riding on hilly or mountainous routes. You should check the wear of the brake pads, make sure the discs are clean, and ensure that braking is responsive and easy to modulate. - The chain is often overlooked. How important is it?
Very important. A dirty or dry chain can affect the entire ride. Before a trip, it should be cleaned and lubricated properly. It is also useful to check its wear: a chain that is too worn can also damage the cassette and chainrings. A well-maintained drivetrain means smoother pedaling, less effort, and fewer unexpected problems. - What should never be missing from a travel kit?
There are some essential tools: a spare inner tube, a mini pump or COā cartridge, tire levers, a multitool, and a repair kit. I would also always add a master link for the chain and a small power bank if you use GPS or an eBike. They are small items, but they can save a trip. - One last tip before departure?
Do not wait until the day before leaving to check your bike. Ideally, you should do a short test ride with the bike already loaded, so you can immediately spot anything that needs fixing. And remember that bike travel is not just about performance: it is about discovery, freedom, and the joy of riding. Setting off prepared means truly enjoying every kilometer.
