Weekend cycling on the shores of the lake

The lake district of Lake Trasimeno, Italy's fourth largest lake, is one of the most characteristic and well-known in Umbria, as well as one of the most popular with cycle tourists, who can choose to cycle along its flat shores or climb the surrounding hills, admiring its three islands from above and, if the time is right, unforgettable sunsets.
Ancient fishing villages alternate with small beaches and tourist spots, and breathtaking viewpoints add to the beauty of the most important villages, such as Castiglione del Lago, Passignano, Tuoro and Magione.
A gentle, romantic landscape, ideal for cycling to discover its countless facets. You can cycle along its shores, effortlessly, watching the fishermen up close and then stop for lunch in a small trattoria overlooking the lake to enjoy a dish of fresh fish or the typical torta al testo. Or climb the hills to reach the medieval villages of Panicale, Paciano and Città della Pieve, visit these charming towns and discover some of the most beautiful panoramic views in Umbria.
Itinerary
Friday: Welcome to Lake Trasimeno
Arrival in the Lake Trasimeno area After settling into your accommodation, you will be welcomed to Umbria with a wine tasting in a local winery. Overnight stay in Passignano sul Trasimeno.
Saturday: A day cycling through nature and history
The day will be spent entirely on bicycles. Departure in the morning from Passignano sul Trasimeno towards Castiglione del Lago. The route runs along the lake on an unpaved road, turning into a pleasant cycle/pedestrian path on compacted gravel, with numerous footbridges and picnic areas. The scenery of the reed beds and the ease with which you can spot wild birds in this part of the Lake Trasimeno protected area make it worth stopping several times to enjoy the view of the lake. Free lunch There will be a short stop at Campo del Sole and on the shores of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, the scene of the “Battle of Trasimeno” on 24 June 217 BC, in which Hannibal’s Carthaginian army defeated the Roman army. Return by bike. Overnight stay.
Sunday: Discovering Isola Maggiore
In the morning, a mini-cruise will take you to Isola Maggiore, one of the three islands in the lake and the only one that is inhabited. It hosted St. Francis during an entire Lent. The small village consists of a single paved road lined with 14th- and 15th-century houses, among which the charming house of the Capitano del Popolo stands out.

Arrivo nella splendida cornice del Lago Trasimeno, conosciuto come il "mare dell'Umbria". Dopo il check-in nella tua struttura a Passignano sul Trasimeno, il weekend inizia con un’accoglienza speciale: una degustazione di vini locali in una cantina del territorio. Lasciati conquistare dai profumi e dai sapori di vini pregiati, immerso in un'atmosfera conviviale e autentica, che ti farà sentire subito a casa.
Pernottamento a Passignano sul Trasimeno, pronto per iniziare l’avventura.
Dopo la colazione, si parte in bicicletta per un percorso emozionante che ti farà vivere il Lago Trasimeno da vicino. L’itinerario inizia a Passignano e si snoda verso Castiglione del Lago, attraversando paesaggi unici lungo le sponde del lago.
La strada, un piacevole itinerario ciclopedonale di terra battuta e pressata, offre scorci spettacolari tra i canneti e le aree protette. Prepara la macchina fotografica: la ricchezza dell’avifauna selvatica, con aironi e altre specie, merita una sosta. Lungo il percorso troverai anche ponticelli e aree picnic, perfetti per riposarti e goderti la vista sul lago. Per pranzo, puoi optare per una sosta libera in uno dei punti panoramici o in una trattoria locale per assaporare i piatti tradizionali umbri.
Nel pomeriggio, la pedalata continua verso il suggestivo Campo del Sole, un’installazione artistica a cielo aperto composta da sculture in pietra, per poi proseguire fino a Tuoro sul Trasimeno, teatro della storica battaglia del 217 a.C. tra Annibale e i Romani.
Rientro a Passignano in bicicletta nel tardo pomeriggio e pernottamento.

Alla scoperta di Isola Maggiore
Dopo la colazione, sali a bordo di una minicrociera che ti porterà verso Isola Maggiore, l’unica isola abitata del Lago Trasimeno. Qui, il tempo sembra essersi fermato. Passeggia lungo la strada lastricata che attraversa il villaggio e scopri le antiche case medievali, come la Casa del Capitano del Popolo.
Questa piccola isola è anche un luogo di spiritualità: si narra che San Francesco d’Assisi vi trascorse un’intera quaresima in meditazione. Goditi l’atmosfera tranquilla e i panorami incantevoli prima di rientrare sulla terraferma.
Nel pomeriggio, concludi il tuo weekend con un’ultima passeggiata lungo il lago o un momento di relax in riva alle sue acque, portando con te il ricordo di un’esperienza unica nel cuore verde d’Italia.
